Indian Railways Extends Flexi Fare System Despite Less Occupancy

The flexi fare system was introduced on September 9, 2016, and it managed to obtain high revenues for the Indian Railways. The number of passengers went down in the beginning, however, the system soon gained grip.

The Indian Railways, however, decided to pull the plug on the system because of the average monthly occupancy turned out to be less than 50%.

And now, the national transporter has announced that the Railway Ministry has decided to extend the rationalisation of the Flexi fare system for another year, i.e., from 15 March 2020 to 14 March 2021.

The website states, “Railways have decided that the currency of rationalisation of flexi fare scheme shall be extended further for another period of one year i.e. from 15.03.2020 to 14.03.2021.”

This extension will be applicable on premium trains, such as the Rajdhani Express, the Shatabdi Express and the Duronto Express.

Indian Railways Reduces Cap Of The Fare; Makes Attempts To Increase Occupancy

The Indian Railways has decided to slash the current cap of 1.5 times the fare to 1.4 times the fare as well.

Additionally, to increase the occupancy of the less popular classes such as 2A, 3A, CC etc., there will also be a graded discount of 20% on the last fare amount on all the trains which run on the Flexi fare system and the occupancy is less than 60%. However, this will be available for four days before the scheduled departure of the train.
